Steps for Starting a Home Based Business
Written By Kyle Brady
Is it your dream to start your own photography business? If you are a passionate hobbyist photographer who would like to make a career out of something that love doing, then this article is for you. My goal is to help you consider a few things before jumping into business for yourself as a professional photographer.
Have you defined the type of photography do you want to specialize in? It is critical to to set yourself apart by specializing in a type of photography. Your choice should reflect your personality. It could be weddings, commercial, babies, whatever you find most enjoyable. Do not try to be a jack of all trades and be successful as there will always be specialists who will take your clients searching for their type of work.
What is your marketing plan? Owning a photography business requires much more than just taking great pictures. It also requires that you are able to successfully bring in new clientele on a continual business. This will take a marketing plan that is constantly analyzed and tracked for success.
There are many ways to market your photography business. These include a website, yellow pages, newspapers, flyers, posters, press releases, and word-of-mouth. What works in one area may not work in another area. Only by tracking will you be able to know what works and what doesn't.
Have you defined your business? This is often called "branding" your business and consists of everything that sets your business apart from the competition. A successful brand will connect your customers to you and provide them a consistent and rewarding experience every time they work with you. It is much more than just colors, logos and styles but includes everything the customer sees, touches and feels regarding your business.
What is your budget? In order to run a successful business you will need to establish a budget in order to set money aside for equipment, advertising, taxes, material, etc. Most importantly you also need to pay yourself! The beauty of a photography business is that with the low cost of digital cameras the price barrier to entry is much smaller than it used to be. However, it is easy to max your credit cards in the purchase of lighting, computer equipment, software etc. A budget is critical to keeping these costs under control.
Do you have a mentor? It is highly advisable to seek out help from other small business owners to guide you in your journey. Don't look just for someone who is a good photographer. Search out those who are successful small business owners in your area. They can be great guides in finding out what advertising works in your area. They can also be wonderful networking tools to put you in touch with other business people to help you in your journey such as bankers, shop owners, etc. A mentor can mean the difference between success and failure.
In conclusion, I wish you much success in your photography business and I hope that this article will spur you toward that goal. Your new career can be either frustrating or fulfilling depending on how you go about it. Here is to your success!
