Written By Jennifer Herbst

It is a fact that most people have a number of misconceptions on fat. While most of us try to eat healthy and to follow all the latest advices on what is the correct diet for us. Did you ever ask yourself if this claims are really valid?

A lot of doctors and specialist will have been teaching the public for years that fats are the main factor for heart diseases. It is important that you understand that fats are only on factor, not the one single factor. Also you need to understand that there are some fats which your body needs to function properly. You need fats to be healthy!

Every cell membrane contains mostly fat. This tells us that we have to consume a specific amount of fats. This is necessary for our cells to function properly. No, I didnt say that you should run out and order a supersized BigMac meal. It means that you should make the right decision on what are "healthy fats". For example coconut fat contains 92% of saturated fat and is considered a very healthy fat, also extra virgin olive oil is a very good source of healthy fat. Avocados and fish needs also to be mentioned. Fish especially which contains the very important Omega 3's and Omega 6's. And last but not least nuts, which also contain a good amount of healthy fats.

The fats that we consume from vegetable and animal sources are needed fats. They give our body a concentrated source of energy as well as a variety of hormones, hormonelike substances and the building blocks we need for cell membranes. Fats are also important when it comes to the amount of food we eat. Fat helps us eat less because the fat is absorbed slower, which means that we feel fuller sooner and feel fuller longer. We can't forget that there are certain fat-soluble vitamins and minerals that our body needs to be healthy such as K, D, E and A.

There is an old adage "everything in moderation," and that is key to the amount of fats that we consume. Make sure you eat fats from both sources vegetables and animals. This will ensure that you have all the necessary material for a healthy body.

There is evidence world over that a diet that contains saturated fat, the healthy types, actually helps reduce the risk and incidence of heart disease. Actually the case for fish oil was started by a study that was done on the Eskimos. Scientists found that Eskimos were virtually free of heart disease and that was directly linked to the amount of fat the consumed from the amount of fish that they ate.

Also the Mediterranean way of eating is know as a very healthy way of eating. Which again is a diet which is high on saturated fats. These are contained in the fish and olive oil which is used in these regions of the world. Some even say that this is the most healthiest way of eating and if you want to expand your lifetime you should consider the Mediterranean way of eating.

The point of this whole article is that before you decide to eliminate all fats from your diet, you should consider what fats you are actually consuming, get your food from healthy sources and eat with moderation.
