Things to Consider Before Buying Wedding Rings
Written By Ronny S. Talmor
There are so many things to consider when purchasing wedding bands that it can seem awfully overwhelming. Should you buy matching sets, what kinds of metals to choose from, diamond size and quality, and a myriad of other things. That doesn't even include pushy sales people that you just want to smack and yell at them to back off from you for a minute.
Before you even step foot in a jewelry store, you and your fianc should do a bit of research. If you familiarize yourself with wedding rings, you will be less likely to be talked into something you'll later regret by that salesperson. One major decision that is often the most difficult is the selection of the metal. Both yellow and white gold, silver, and platinum are commonly used to craft wedding rings. Silver, while usually the least expensive, is frequently frowned on by future spouses.
Yellow gold is often softer than white gold and has to be combined with another metal to make it hard. The higher quality the gold, the softer it is going to be. White gold has been treated to make it that white brilliant finish, and will be more expensive, due to the additional material. Platinum, a highly regarded metal used in wedding rings, is very hard to come by and is of the highest cost.
Next consideration is the diamond itself. With all the different cuts available, this is probably the next biggest decision you will make. The more facets a diamond has, the more intricate the cut the more expensive it will be. There are many websites available to that will provide a much more detailed description of the various cuts and styles available.
Looking over these guides will help you out in your decisions tremendously.
Now the next thing to consider is whether or not you choose a matching set, or something separately that will fit well together. It is up to the individual couple to decide this, since some matching sets can be more costly than finding them separately. When my wife and I were looking to purchase our rings, she found a really nice white gold mixed set for her, with the engagement ring and band combining to make a nice intricate flower. There was no matching mans ring for it, but across the room we discovered my band that was not only the same material, but the leaf carvings were almost identical to hers, it made a perfect set, and they both were under $500 total.
If you want to avoid problems, try really hard to avoid knock offs, like clarity enhanced diamonds. If they were enhanced, they weren't that good in the first place. It's kind of like buying a car that has been wrecked but painted to look better. While it may look really nice, it's still a piece of junk.
Regardless of what the two of you decide on, make sure you don't rush into anything. This is why you want to learn all you can about wedding sets. You will have a really good idea of what you're looking for and you won't be convinced to buy something you don't want by sales people that aren't thinking of your best interests.
